(AP) ? LeBron James has always put up big numbers when he comes to Target Center to play the Minnesota Timberwolves. And he rarely has to break a sweat ? or play in the fourth quarter ? to do it.

Now that Ricky Rubio is running the point and Rick Adelman is calling the shots for the Timberwolves, James and the rest of the NBA are going to have to work for everything they get when they come to town.

Dwyane Wade hit a jumper from the wing, then scored on an inbounds pass from James with 4.6 seconds to play to lift the undefeated Heat to a 103-101 victory over the Wolves on Friday night.

Playing on a sore foot, Wade finished with 19 points, while James had 34 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds on his 27th birthday.

"I'm glad we played them early because later they're going to be trouble," Wade said. "So I think Timberwolves fans will have something to cheer about for a while here."

Rubio had 12 points, 12 assists and six rebounds, and Kevin Love had 25 points and 12 boards for the Timberwolves, who led 100-99 with 55 seconds to play.

But Wade hit a jumper and then lost Rubio on an inbounds play to make the winning bucket, one game after beating the Charlotte Bobcats with a last-second shot. Wade said he suggested the play after the Celtics used it to beat the Heat in a playoff game in 2010.

"We stole it," James said. "And D-Wade, that's two game-winners back to back, right? Good for him. I like it."

It was a crushing defeat for the upstart Wolves, who had the mighty Heat on the ropes all fourth quarter thanks to Rubio's brilliance. The Spanish rookie fed open teammates for easy buckets and hit a 3-pointer with 2:28 to play that gave them a 98-94 lead.

But James scored on a crucial three-point play and Anthony Tolliver missed two key free throws in the final minute to give Wade a chance to steal it.

"We did a lot of good things tonight," said Adelman, whose Wolves have lost their first three games of the season by a combined nine points. "It's just sooner or later you have to keep through it and give yourself a win at the end. If they stay with, they'll do that."

Anthony Randolph had 14 points and Wayne Ellington added 11 off the bench for Minnesota.

Chris Bosh had 20 points and nine rebounds, and Norris Cole scored 12 for the Heat.

It was a thrilling back-and-forth between a star-studded team that counts a loss in the NBA finals as a failure and the young up-and-comers who have lost 18 straight games dating back to last season.

Playing without veteran guard J.J. Barea, who tormented the Heat in the finals with Dallas, because of a strained right hamstring, the Wolves ripped off an 11-0 run in the final period for an 88-83 lead with 7:20 to play.

Bosh kept the Heat in it with some sharp shooting, hitting jumper after jumper just over Love's out-stretched hand.

James turned 27 on Friday, and he said earlier in the day he always plays with a little extra juice on his birthday and the numbers support that. He entered the game averaging 35.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists in four previous birthday games.

True to form, he scored 15 points in the first quarter, and the Heat flustered the young Wolves into six turnovers and 39 percent shooting. Cole then scored six of the Heat's first eight points in the second quarter for a 39-26 lead, and it looked like Miami was pulling away.

But Rubio, Randolph and Ellington spearheaded a 14-0 run to put the Wolves back in front. Criticized for his shooting before coming to the NBA, Rubio hit an open jumper and added a three-point play for a 49-45 lead. Then he threw an alley-oop pass high over the rim that Randolph threw down, sending the packed Target Center crowd into a frenzy.

"We want to win and we are young and we have to learn from these experiences," Rubio said.

James turned the third quarter into a one-man dunk contest, soaring through the air for three straight that put the Heat back in control. He threw down a windmill, a baseline lob from Cole and a final one-handed hammer for a 78-72 lead.

Rubio also had a costly turnover with 1:36 to play and Ellington missed a forced jumper at the buzzer for another loss. But for the first time in a long time, the Wolves see better days right around the corner.

"They're going to be a really good team," James said. "If it's not this year, soon."

NOTES: The Heat are 4-0 for the second time in franchise history, and first since 2004-05. ... The Wolves have now sold out both home games, the first time they've sold out two in a row to start a season since 1991-92. It's their first consecutive sellouts since 2003-04, when they went to the Western Conference finals. ... James registered his 400th career regular season victory. Since he came into the league, only eight other players have been on the floor for at least 400 wins. ... Timberwolves G Malcolm Lee will miss the next six weeks after having surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Duke Energy cleared to build high voltage line near reservation

State regulators have cleared Duke Energy?

The N.C. Utilities Commission ruled against the tribe and other residents in the Kituwah Valley? a site sacred to the Cherokee ? that Duke had acted illegally in starting construction of a 161-kilovolt transmission line up grade designed to serve the Harrah?s Cherokee hotel and casino in Murphy.

The groups had contended that the construction harmed property values by destroying the scenic beauty of the region. They asked that the project be halted or that they be compensated for the loss of value to their property.

The commission ruled Wednesday that the complaining parties had not carried their ?burden of proof to show that Duke acted unreasonably and inappropriately? in planning the upgrade. It declined to halt the project. And it said it did not have the authority to order compensation for any loss of property value. ?The complainant?s members will need to pursue that remedy in the appropriate court,? the commission said.

The Cherokee also objected in the original complaint to Duke?s plans to locate an electrical tie station near Kituwah, a sacred place for the Cherokee on the Tuckaseegee River east of Bryson City. But Duke voluntarily relocated that station.

This box by Less Loss is a "shield" that keeps "noise" out of your stereo. It costs (I'm not making this up) $1,323. The box, when paired with $700 RCA cables, promises to reduce noise in your stereo equipment and, as one reviewer noted, it will cause your body to spasm wildly.

Troops made a grisly Christmas discovery in northeastern Mexico when they found 13 bodies in a truck, in the latest violence between warring drug cartels.

Soldiers found two messages at the scene in Tamaulipas state "alluding to the rivalry between criminal groups" in the northeast, the Department of Justice said in a statement early Monday.

Investigators say the murders are linked to Friday's discovery of 10 bodies in the town of Tampico Alto, in neighbouring Veracruz state, and attacks by gunmen last week on three buses that left 16 people dead.

Two months ago, the government of President Felipe Calderon sent police and army reinforcements into Veracruz after an escalation in killings attributed to the bloody feud between the Zetas, one of Mexico's most violent cartels, and the Sinaloa cartel, which operates in the area.

The move was part of Calderon's national crackdown on drug cartels launched in December 2006. More than 45,000 people have been killed since then in drug-related violence.

Tests Show That Your Amazon Kindle Isn't Going to Bring Down an Airplane (The Atlantic Wire)

Tech reporter Nick Bilton continues his one-man war on the FAA regulations that prevent you from turning on your iPads, Kindles, and other electronic devices while taking off and landing in airplanes. Bilton has a report today at The New York Times blogs today about just how much energy those little doo-dads put out and the simple fact is that it just isn't enough to interfere with anything, especially not a well-designed aircraft.

Related: Comment of the Day: A Way to Screen for Bombs Inside of You

According to the lab that certifies electrical devices for?government safety standards, an airplane must be able to withstand "100 volts per meter" of interference. An Amazon Kindle emits less 0.00003 volts. What's more: having multiple electrical devices doesn't multiply the effect. The amount of interference is the same, whether it's one device or 1,000.?

Related: The Technological Marvels Microsoft Hides in Its Labs

Since there are other electrical devices that aren't banned (hearing aids, electric razors), none of the other justifications for the ban on portable devices seem to hold up. Or, at best, the rules may make sense for some reasons (devices are distracting or can become potentially dangerous projectiles in an emergency), but are inconsistently and illogically applied. (So are books and small pets.)

Related: FBI Investigates Stun Gun's Mysterious Appearance on JetBlue Plane

As someone who doesn't enjoy flying and doesn't need another terrible security flaw to be afraid of, I have no problem sitting quietly for 30 minutes or so while the plane takes off and lands. But it's hard to argue with Bilton's crusade (to be fair, he isn't arguing for unfettered phone use, just the right to use "airplane mode") ?or notice a pattern in our?government's?approach to air travel ? worrying more about the illusion of safety than actually creating it.

Blowout win over Mavericks backs up NBA commissioner's description of Heat

Five garbage-time minutes remained in Sunday's holiday spanking when Mark Cuban finally got LeBron James' attention.

Play was in. The clock was running.

The Heat had the ball and a 20-point lead on their way to a 105-94 victory on a shockingly easy Christmas afternoon.

But that didn't stop the Mavericks owner, arms folded tightly across his gray T-shirt as he slumped in his usual baseline seat, from launching a quick salvo.

Judging from the wry smile on Cuban's face and the way he shook his head in mock resignation, he wasn't heckling LeBron.

Far from it.

More like crying "uncle."

The way the rest of the NBA could soon be if this sort of thing continues.

"Cuban's a good guy, man," LeBron said after his 37-point showing. "I'm not going to tell you what he said."

Not even a hint?

"Ask him what he said," LeBron said, laughing aloud at the thought. "It's all good."

Last year's championship banner was raised to the rafters before Sunday's tipoff. It was a 10-minute ceremony the Heat wisely chose to skip before coming out and putting the rest of the basketball world on notice.

You thought the Heat were dominant at times last season in coming within two wins of the NBA title?

You thought they looked overwhelming during the first three playoff rounds, when they dropped just one game apiece to the Sixers, Celtics and Bulls?

That was nothing compared to how they played for much of this season opener at American Airlines Center.

Dwyane Wade (26 points) was the only other Heat player in double figures. Chris Bosh missed seven of nine shots from the field.

Yet that hardly mattered with LeBron tossing in turnaround bank shots with his left hand.

Not to mention the sort of team defense and rebounding the Heat put on display.

Those factors led to 31 fastbreak points and a 35-point bulge after the break that felt twice that large.

They held the Mavericks to 29-percent shooting in the first half, more than doubled them up on the boards and turned what was supposed to be a victory lap into a public flogging.

Watching it all from courtside was David Stern, kind enough not to void this Christmas clunker and declare a do-over.

Earlier, the NBA commissioner had used three prime adjectives to describe this Heat team.

"Interesting" was the first.

"Fun" was the second.

Later, he tossed in "formidable" for good measure.

Gee, ya think?

"Those are great words," Wade said. "Coming from the commissioner, those are great words for us as a team. We appreciate the kind words."

No more finger-wagging between those two.

Basketball is back, and with it the Heat's pursuit of an NBA crown that nearly became theirs six months ago, probably a year ahead of schedule.

Now along comes Superfriends: Version 2.0, and even Stern seems to be coming around.

"Those are accurate descriptions of who we are," James Jones said. "Whenever you have three big stars, you're formidable, and we're a unique, interesting team because of the personalties we have. Our guys are tremendous athletes but they're also charismatic, soft-spoken and electric."

Who needs a Thesaurus with this guy around?

Newcomer Shane Battier also endorsed Stern's word choices.

"I would agree with all of those," Battier said. "Pretty apropos. This is a dynamic team in more ways than one. The key word is 'team.' "

Then there was LeBron, who hasn't always felt like one of Stern's favorites.

"He said that about us?" LeBron said, a bit stunned for a moment. "What does that last word mean? I didn't go to college."

Formidable? Uh, that means "inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense or capable."

All of which applied Sunday.

"OK," LeBron said, nodding. "I appreciate the words of kindness from the commissioner."

A trophy six months hence would be even better.

Get to Know One of Disc Golf's Best: Nikko Locastro

Nikko Locastro is one of the best disc golf players in the world, and he's currently up for the 2011 "Player of the Year" award, along with David Feldberg, Nate Doss, Paul Ulibarri, Paul McBeth, Will Schusterick and Josh Anthon.

He's had a great year, and hopes to make 2012 even better. On a recent blog posting, Locastro said he's been gearing up for next year, and in the off season he's been working on his custom designs, practicing and working out. He's been involved in creating a full range of NLDG (Nikko Locastro Disc Golf) custom art on discs, and has over 25 designs that are "in the works." His site already has some amazing custom designed t-shirts for sale as well.

Locastro said he has plans to really try and spread the word about disc golf, and hopes to do a lot more demonstrating. He comments, "I love the feeling of helping someone make improvements. This is something that I will do a lot more in the future." He also stated that, "Disc Golf is on an up rise and will continue to grow." I couldn't agree more, and Locastro's talents are a big part of it.

Locastro says in regard to the upcoming year, "I know with a good work ethic and routine I can continue to develop skills on and off the disc golf course. I do not want to look back in 2013 thinking I should have worked harder." Somehow I have a feeling that won't happen.

This year, he's played in 33 tournaments throughout the U.S. as well as internationally, and he's been the winner in 16 of them. That's a pretty amazing feat, and he's just 23 years old. Nikko's been playing disc golf for eight years, and has made big strides during that time.

In 2004, he placed fifth in the under 16 boys division at the Wisconsin Junior Championships, and had a seventh place finish in the advanced division at the Gateway Open four months later in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. The following year, Locastro was the advanced division winner at the St. Louis Spring Sizzler and had a fifth place finish in the same division at the St. Louis Open. He was victorious in that event in 2006.

2006 was also the year Locastro began competing in the open division, and he was the winner of both the Capital City Challenge and the Let's Do It Again. 2007 and 2008 saw him accomplish even more, and he took home more victories in the open division, including the Illinois Open in September 2008.

Locastro really took off in 2009, winning the United States Disc Golf Championship, the National Tour Series and much more. In 2010, he won the Japan Open, the Stockholm Disc Golf Open in Sweden and the Vibram Open, among many others. At the World Championships, he had an impressive sixth place finish.

Each year has continued to see Locastro become even more successful. Just some of his wins in 2011 include the National Tour Series, the Stockholm Open, the Texas State Disc Golf Championships and the Veterans Park Open. He had an impressive fourth place finish at the Professional Disc Golf World Championships this summer as well.

The odds are, he will accomplish even more in 2012. Congratulations to Nikko Locastro and the excellent job on making a great sport that much better.

The first time K.C. Dermody played disc golf was in the spectacular Black Hills of South Dakota. She has since become addicted to promoting the sport, and enjoys playing in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She welcomes comments and suggestions, with the goal of promoting the sport of disc golf throughout the world. Find her on www.facebook.com/KCDermodyWriter.

Iran Begins Drill Near Key Oil Route

Iran's navy has begun a 10-day drill in international waters beyond the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the passageway for about a third of the world's oil tanker traffic.

The exercise could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels in the area.

Navy chief Adm. Habibollah Sayyari says Iran is holding the war games to show off its prowess and defense capabilities. State TV broadcast his comments on Saturday.

The drill will be Iran's latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its controversial nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at producing atomic weapons. Tehran denies those charges, insisting the program is for peaceful purposes only.

Beyond the Strait of Hormuz, a major passageway for the world's oil tanker traffic, lie vast bodies of water, including the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet is also active in the area, as are warships of several other countries that patrol for pirates there.

Both the U.S. and Israel have not ruled out a military option against Iran over its nuclear program, while Iranian hard-liners have come out with occasional threats that Tehran would seal off the key waterway if the U.S. or Israel moved against the country's nuclear facilities.

Sayyari told Iranian state TV that the maneuvers, dubbed Velayat-90, will begin on Saturday. He said they will be held in a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of sea off the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula and into the Gulf of Aden, near the entrance to the Red Sea.

Iran regularly holds war games and has also been active in fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

Sayyari denied an Iranian media report from last week that the drill would close the Strait of Hormuz. "There has been no decision yet on this," he was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

However, he stressed that Iran's navy and the Revolutionary Guard have the capability to close the strait but that "any decision on this will have to come from the leader," referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Sayyari said Iranian navy would use submarines, warships, missiles and torpedoes as well as unmanned planes during the drill but that it would take place "within the framework of international norms."

CLICO policy holders in Trinidad mount legal action against ...

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Thursday December 22, 2011 ? Not satisfied with the payout plan recently offered by government to some larger CLICO investors and policyholders, one association of policyholders is targeting former CLICO directors to make up the shortfall.

The Santa Rosa Team, which represents a number of CLICO Executive Flexible Premium Annuity (EFPA) policyholders, announced this week that they were going after the ?the hundreds of millions of dollars (and possibly much more) in assets of those who are directly responsible for [the policyholders] financial plight.?

In the statement issued on Monday, December 19, the Santa Rosa team argued that the difference between what the EFPA policyholders were due (as per Rajnauth-Lee judgment) and what they were now being offered by the government, was a loss resulting directly from a ?catalogue of failures on the part of directors, past and present to discharge their fiduciary responsibilities, and in some cases perhaps to have conspired in the execution of fraudulent acts?.

Under its new plan, government has said policyholders for the first ten years would get a yield of approximately 80 cents for every dollar of their investment if they chose to cash in their investment within six months.

For years 11 to 20, the investors have been promised a return of 100 cents on the dollar, if they opt to swap these zero-coupon bonds for units in the investment holding company that has been called NEL II.

David Walker, the lead consultant for the Santa Rosa Team, said Monday?s statement that the legal action also included those who chose to accept the government?s offer, but he we strongly recommended the EFPA policyholders to reject the government plan as it greatly reduced their chances of getting a full payout.

He urged the EFPA policyholders in the statement to lend their support both for the likelihood of a greater settlement and for the national good. Click here?to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)

This is a hardcore man versus nature work of cinema, that deals with the psychology, the desperation and the power that comes from an intense survival film. ? In a way, think of this like a really practical version of ALIENS. ? But instead of pure popcorn, it had a bit of that Kurosawa scripted soul from RUNAWAY TRAIN that?Andrey Konchalovskiy?directed and still hold my favorite Jon Voight performance. ? Here, it is Liam Neeson, who just transcends...

So, without further pomp - just let me tell you - SEE THIS MOVIE. ??

Morty Lefkoe: Do You Feel You Don't Deserve Your Success?

Are you one of the many executives who secretly feels that you are an impostor who doesn't really deserve your success? Do you feel, deep down, that you are really not good enough and that if others knew the truth about you, you'd lose all you had achieved?

If so, you are not alone. So many business executives have this feeling that it has been labeled the "Impostor Syndrome."

This common psychological phenomenon demonstrates how it is possible to hold negative beliefs about oneself despite a tremendous amount of evidence to the contrary. It seems that once we form these negative beliefs as a child, lots of evidence (a lot of practical success) and logical arguments are not sufficient to get rid of the beliefs.

I've written in prior posts why so many of us have negative self-esteem beliefs. But the question remains: Why do many people who believe I'm not good enough, I'm inadequate, I'm not capable, There's something wrong with me, I'm not important, I'm a fake and a fraud and other similar beliefs fail to achieve business success while other people with the same beliefs achieve tremendous success in business.

How do you survive?

There is a simple answer: a special type of belief that I call a "survival strategy belief."

Let me explain. Imagine you are a young child who has created a host of negative beliefs about yourself or about life. At this point you are in school, interacting with lots of other kids and adults. It dawns on you that you are going to grow up and will have to make your own way in life. You are confronted with a real dilemma, albeit an unconscious one: "How will I make it in life if there's something fundamentally wrong with me?"

Imagine the fear and anxiety you must feel when you experience these two conflicting "facts": On one hand, you sense that you must make it on your own in life. On the other hand, you have concluded that "There's something fundamentally wrong with me that will make it difficult, if not impossible, to make it on my own."

Anxiety is a painful feeling, so children who have it try to find ways of not feeling it. In tens of thousands of sessions with clients, I've discovered that people have two basic ways of dealing with the unpleasant feelings that are caused by negative self-esteem beliefs:

First, they use alcohol, drugs, sex, food, or other substances to cover up the feelings and numb themselves or to make themselves feel good. Underneath all addictions is a negative sense of self-esteem.

Second, they develop strategies that help them deal with the anxiety that stems from their negative beliefs. I call them "survival strategies" because the fear one experiences when one has negative self-esteem beliefs often makes one feel as if his survival is being threatened.

When a survival strategy is formed, the child also forms a belief about that strategy: "What makes me good enough (or important, or worthwhile, etc.) is having others think well of me (or making a lot of money, or taking care of people, etc.)" A variation of that is: "The way to survive is ...."

Survival strategies are based on a child's observation of what it takes to feel good about herself, to be important, to be worthwhile, or to be able to deal with life in spite of negative self-esteem beliefs.

(By the way, if you think you don't have any negative self-esteem beliefs, ask yourself: What makes you good enough [or important, or worthwhile, etc.]? When you answer anything other than "Nothing," it becomes clear that you need whatever you answered in order to be okay.)

$1,000,000 a year didn't help

Lawrence, a former client who works as an executive in a Wall Street firm, earns over $1,000,000 a year. His core belief is I don't matter, and his survival strategy belief is: What makes me worthwhile is being seen as important by others. As a result, he becomes anxious whenever a new person gets hired, or a colleague wins praise, or he isn't included in a meeting, or his boss doesn't acknowledge him after he's completed a project. In addition, that same belief has him work 14 hours a day, seven days a week, achieving things that his peers will see as important.

One consequence of being run by survival strategy beliefs is that you experience your survival as dependent on the success of your survival strategy. The need to fulfill the terms of your survival strategy dominates your life. Once you say you're not worthwhile just the way you are, no amount of accomplishment or praise will provide the unconditional sense of self-esteem you want and need.

So it should now be clear how it is possible to reach high positions in management and have all the trappings of success and still doubt yourself: you have a survival strategy belief that drove you to succeed and, at the same time, you had a lot of negative self-esteem beliefs underneath that makes you feel like an impostor.

Luckily, it is possible to eliminate your negative self-esteem beliefs, which will enable you to enjoy your success and no longer fear it will be taken away from you.

Michael Lohan on Possible Kate Major Love Child: I Heard About That ...

Michael Lohan is weighing in for the first time on Kate Major's possible pregnancy in a new interview ... apparently these two nut jobs only communicate via Dr. Drew.

MiLo says he's heard about it, but not much more than we have.

"I've heard about it ... When she left her dads house, she left some medication and her pills there and she was off the pill for like 4-5 days and of course we had sex."

"So there was a chance ... from what I understand now, she says she's pregnant or she could be. Evidently she is taking the test so she thinks she might be."

Riveting insight right there.

Michael Lohan and Dr. Drew

Asked about how he would react if Kate Major were pregnant, given that neither of them believe in abortion as a possibility, Mike told Dr. Drew the following:

"I would never, never, never want to let a child grow up without a father and a mother, so if she was pregnant, it would be something that she has to consider."

"Does she want to raise a baby on her own? I don't think so."

Michael Lohan added that his relationship with his children with Dina Lohan would improve as they get older and would not be affected adversely by this.

He also said that he has not seen any Lindsay Lohan Playboy pictures, nor will he be checking those out for obvious reasons, but he supports the career move.

Apple awarded a patent for in-call app switching, starts drafting next lawsuit

Apple Patent
Wondering how Apple planned to follow up its small victory over HTC in front of the ITC? Well, in addition to opening up a new front in its war on Samsung, the Cupertino crew have added yet another arrow to its IP quiver. The company has been awarded a patent for a "portable electronic device with graphical user interface supporting application switching." In other words, a multitasking smartphone. Of course, despite its rather broad wording (which appears to cover almost any phone that lets you switch between calls and apps) an infringing device would have to copy almost every facet of the design to find itself on the wrong side of an ITC judgment. But don't you worry, we're sure Apple lawyers are already hard at work figuring out which Android skin they'll have the most success against in court. And Google is probably already sharing collections of prior art with its manufacturers circle.

Washington's relationship with Ankara amid a "Turkish-American spring"

Turkey's Ambassador to the US Namik Tan said the US relationship with Turkey was in "excellent" condition amid upheaval in Iran, Syria and the wider Middle East at a breakfast sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor.

Turkish Ambassador NAMIK TAN has been Turkey's ambassador to the US since 2010. Turkey ? which borders Iran, Iraq, and Syria, among other countries ? is a key US ally in the Muslim world. Ambassador Tan was the speaker at the Dec. 8 Monitor breakfast in Washington.

The state of US-Turkey relations:

"It is too early to call it an Arab Spring, but ... we have now a Turkish-American Spring.... Our relationship is an excellent situation."

What Turkey seeks from the US to deal with Kurdish PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) terrorists:

US officials have indicated "willingness to help us because they have termed this PKK menace as ... sort of a joint enemy of the United States and Turkey.... They [the Americans] know what we want and we expect them to deliver, and it includes ... the [military] drone."

Turkey's role in dealing with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's violent suppression of reform forces:

"It is not an easy challenge for us.... We, as Turkey, we do not want any sort of military involvement in any way ... unless there is an international decision which comes out of the UN."

How criticizing Mr. Assad might hurt Turkish business interests in Syria:

"We have businessmen everywhere in the region. But business never comes before the values."

Assurances that Vice President Joe Biden offered about Iraq during his recent trip to Turkey:

"He assured us that Iraq will [retain] its relative stability intact, even after the United States leaves that country by the end of this year.... We do have concerns. We know it is not always possible to deal with the current situation through words."

Turkish efforts to keep Iran from having nuclear weapons:

"Some other countries ... have tried to transfer certain goods which would help ... Iran's program for a nuclear weapon, and we have stopped them."

Problems with motor control may be a key factor in bipolar disorder

Image: Elijas van Roon/Corbis

None of us can stand perfectly still. No matter how hard we try, our bodies constantly make small adjustments, causing us to sway slightly as we stand. A new study finds that people with bipolar disorder tend to sway more than those who are unaffected, which may lead to new ways to treat and diagnose the illness.

When psychologists diagnose bipolar disorder, they typically look for mood swings between agitated mania and bleak depression. Previous studies have linked bipolar disorder to abnormalities in the cerebellum and basal ganglia, regions of the brain that are also important for motor control. This connection led Indiana University psychologist Amanda Bolbecker and her colleagues to hypothesize that people with bipolar disorder might also have problems with motor skills.

To test their idea, Bolbecker?s team had 16 people with bipolar disorder and 16 age-matched healthy control subjects stand on a device called a force platform. The platform is similar in ap?pearance to a bathroom scale, but instead of measuring weight it calculates the pressure from different parts of the feet, which indicates how the body is swaying.

In every trial?with their eyes open or closed and with their feet different widths apart?the people with bipolar disorder wobbled more than the healthy subjects, indicating problems with motor control. The patients had the most trouble with their eyes closed, which suggests that the bipolar brain has difficulty integrating sensorimotor information, those inputs from the body and senses that assist the brain in maintaining balance and body position.

Bolbecker points out that the cerebellum, located at the base of the brain, helps to regulate movement and is also involved in emotional reactions, such as fear and pleasure. In addition, the cerebellum connects to other parts of the brain linked to cognition, mood regulation and impulse control, three areas in which patients with bipolar disorder often have difficulties. If the cerebellum is damaged at the cellular level, it may create problems with both mood and motor control.
